ADHD/ADD Q & A

What is ADHD/ADD?

ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and ADD (attention-deficit disorder) are similar mental health challenges that make it difficult to pay attention, focus, and stay on task.

ADHD

ADHD is characterized by inattention (difficulty paying attention) and hyperactivity, which means you’re constantly on the move and find it difficult to sit still.

ADD

If you have ADD, it’s difficult for you to focus, but sitting still isn’t necessarily a challenge for you.

What are the signs of ADHD/ADD?

The common symptoms of ADHD/ADD include:

  • Challenges when trying to focus
  • Inability to pay attention for long periods
  • Poor organization
  • Poor time management
  • Poor grades at school
  • Inconsistent work performance
  • Interrupting conversations
  • Getting distracted easily
  • Blurting out answers at school
  • Problems with interpersonal relationships
  • Changing the subject often
  • Not following directions
  • Depression

If you have ADHD, you might squirm or fidget while sitting down and feel constant urges to be moving around.

What might cause ADHD/ADD?

The cause of ADHD and ADD isn’t known. However, your risk of developing these conditions may increase because of a family history of ADHD, toxin exposure as a child, or having a mother who participated in substance misuse while pregnant. Brain injuries, low birth weight, and premature birth are other possible risk factors for ADHD/ADD.

How does my provider diagnose ADHD/ADD?

Diana diagnoses ADHD or ADD using effective screening tools. She asks questions about your medical history, family medical history, medications, symptoms, and lifestyle habits. She completes a psychiatric evaluation to assess your thought patterns, mood, and emotions.

GeneSight® genetic testing helps Diana determine which medications, if any, are likely the most effective based on your genetic makeup.

What are the standard treatments for ADHD/ADD?

Diana takes a holistic approach to treating ADHD/ADD using lifestyle-change counseling and psychotherapy (talk therapy). She helps you learn behavioral change strategies, such as making to-do lists, breaking up larger tasks, getting regular exercise, and eating nutritious foods.

If needed, she offers medication management to help you focus, pay attention, and sit still. Psychotherapy is another effective treatment for ADHD/ADD and other mental health challenges, such as depression or anxiety, that may accompany attention disorders.

Don’t let ADHD/ADD negatively affect school, your career, or your relationships. Call My Wellness Psychiatry to schedule a mental health evaluation or use the online booking tool today.
